Updated 3 November 2026

Short answer: 2:3 is the shape of a standard photo. It covers 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30 and 24×36 inches. A file of 7,200 × 10,800 pixels prints all of them at 300 DPI.

When to use 2:3

Cropping from another shape

If your artwork is square or 4:5, a 2:3 version loses some of the top and bottom (or the sides, in landscape). Choose where the crop is centred, so a face or a signature is not cut.

Questions people ask

Is 4x6 the same ratio as 24x36?

Yes. Both are 2:3, so one large file prints both.

Is 8x10 a 2:3 ratio?

No. 8x10 is 4:5, a wider shape. It needs its own file.
